TEXAS WHISKEY BUILT FROM THE GRAIN UP
Herman Marshall is an independently owned Texas distillery hand-crafting award-winning small-batch whiskey patiently aged in new American white oak barrels.
Making History by Making Whiskey
Herman Marshall Whiskey was founded in 2010 by Master Distiller Herman Beckley and his fellow whiskey connoisseur and business partner Marshall Louis. Their operation in Garland, Texas, was the first legal distillery in Dallas County in nearly a century, since Prohibition in 1919.
To craft their whiskey, they looked to the past. “Prohibition changed everything,” Herman said. “We lost that knowledge about the craft in America. That’s why we’ve tried to bring back that original process as much as possible.”
They researched old bourbon recipes from the 1800s and, with patient trial and error, found the perfect ingredients and techniques to create smooth bold American whiskeys steeped in tradition and refined for today’s tastes.
Built from the Grain Up
Our distillery produces small batch, high proof, hand crafted whiskeys we are proud to distill and age in the Lone Star State. All of our grains and other ingredients are sourced from Texas farms, and the bourbon, rye and single malt are aged for a minimum of four years in a new white oak barrel with a #2 char. We are “still” using our old 300-gallon copper pot still and column that has been in the Herman Marshall family for over 15 years now.
Distilling Award-Winning Whiskey
The value of Herman Marshall’s rigorous whisky making process was quickly validated with numerous industry awards, including a coveted Silver Medal and an impressive 93-point score for out Texas Bourbon in the American Distilling Institute’s (ADI) Annual Spirits competition in 2013. Subsequent recognition incudes being voted “Best Small Batch Bourbon” in the International Whiskey Competition and Bronze Medal for our rye whiskey from the ADI.
Ushering in a New Era
After nearly a decade of growth and success, the adversity of 2020 brought challenges to the Herman Marshall brand resulting in the shutdown of the distillery. In December of 2021, the shuttered operation was purchased by Dry County Distilleries (DCD). DCD opened a tasting room in historic downtown Wylie, Texas in late 2022. The move of the distillery from Garland, Texas to the newly renovated space off Highway 78, also in Wylie, followed shortly after in 2023.
Today, Dry County Distilleries aims to preserve the legacy of Herman Beckley and Marshall Louis with its commitment to community, quality and innovation. Herman serves as Chairman Emeritus and acts as our Distilling Consultant. “I am proud of the legacy Herman Marshall created and the role we have played in the renaissance of Texas whiskey,” Herman says. “This change marks a bold new era for HM and I am thrilled to help the new ownership team take it to the next level and continue to produce award-winning whiskey.”
